RE: Nice Idea

Can anyone tell me what kind of fish these are?  I bought them from the Saskatoon Aquarium Society Fish Auction and some of  them are breeding.  The last picture is of the baby, but they are  so small you can't really see it.

Identify this Cichlid

OK, so the fish you are showing in the first pic I can't see enough of to identify.
The other pics definetly show what I believe is a Hemichromis Bimaculatus, or jewel cichlid. There are several fish in the Hemichromis family so if you google that you will find the info you need. They are very aggressive cichlids and can actually kill others when breeding. From my experience you should leave the first batch of eggs to hatch and hang around for a few weeks before removal. Otherwise the mother may eat her next batch. If this is the cichlid that had babies I would reccommend trying to get them out once they are big enough that you can catch them(and that is never easy). If you have a quarentine tank setup you could put them in it. Otherwise I would reccommend looking for someone who has space for them. If you post a better angle of your first pic I should be able to identify.
